Job Description

About the opportunity…

Reporting to the Engineering Manager, the PHP Software Engineer is responsible for contributing to product features while writing high-quality code (with tests) autonomously.

 

The PHP Software Engineer collaborates within the team, contributes effectively to team workshops and agile processes and shares insights with the team. They are a mentor and a buddy to juniors and graduates and provide technical influence within the team.

 

The core responsibilities of the PHP Software Engineer includes but is not limited to:

  • Culture and Teamwork - act as they would expect other team members to act in line with ELMO’s Values. Works to develop good positive relationships and participates in team activities.
  • Debugging & Monitoring - systematically debug issues located within a single service, whilst taking greater responsibility for the monitoring systems.
  • Security - understands the importance of security and starts to see work through a security lens.
  • Software Architecture - a good understanding of, and designs functions that are aligned with, the overall service architecture.
  • Technical Understanding and Prioritisation - displays a clear technical confidence and understanding, prioritises tasks and acts accordingly.
  • Testing - understands the importance of a testing strategy, with growing levels of autonomy.
  • Writing Code - consistently write testable, readable code across larger more complex projects, follows SOLID principles, design patterns, OOP and REST API endpoints.
  • Communication - communicates with the wider team, feeds back on communication of others.
  • Empathy - constantly pushes for a better understanding of the needs and perspectives of those outside their own viewpoint.
  • Initiative - relentlessly positive in pursuing new ways to solve a problem.
  • Objectivity & Adaptability – changes their mind over strongly held beliefs and pursue a new path with no loss of velocity.
  • Ensure compliance with ELMO’s information security privacy policies and procedures

Desired Skills and Experience

What we would like you to bring to the team...

  • Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree with a concentration in Information Technology, Computer Engineering, Computer Science or equivalent experience of minimum three years.
  • Demonstrated 3-5 years’ work experience as a software engineer in an agile/scrum environment..
  • Well-developed communication, presentation and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrate 3-5 of experience in OOP, preferably but not limited to PHP using Symphony or Laravel
  • Strong understanding of object-oriented programming, Domain Driven Design, SOLID principles, MVC and design patterns.
  • Experience working with or familiarity with identity systems ideal but not essential
  • Skill for writing reusable libraries.
  • Demonstrate experience in MySQL or any other SQL database,
  • Proficient understanding of code versioning tools such as Git, SVN, or Mercurial.
